When I first started shooting POV, my bright sunny-day footage always felt "off" — it was sharp, sure, but choppy, juddery, with this cheap, plasticky look, nothing like the smooth, cinematic riding footage I saw on other channels. It took me a while to figure out the problem was never that my camera wasn't good enough — it was that I wasn't controlling my shutter, and I had no ND filter on the lens. In this article I'll use my own DJI Osmo Action 4 setup to make the whole GoPro-ND-filter-for-motorcycle thing make sense: the 180-degree shutter rule, how to pick the right ND strength, and my full workflow from hitting record to grading the color in post. The principles are universal — it doesn't matter whether you're shooting on a GoPro, an Insta360, or a DJI.

Why sunny-day footage looks so fake

Let me start with a frustration of my own. One gorgeous morning I strapped the DJI Osmo Action 4 to the bike, rode a beautiful stretch of mountain road, and came home buzzing to open the files on my computer — only to find the footage was choppy, the road stuttering past frame by frame, the whole image shaking every time the bike hit a bump. It looked cheap and unreal. Back then I assumed my stabilization wasn't strong enough, or that 4K wasn't detailed enough. I was chasing the wrong thing entirely.

The real culprit is a shutter that's too fast. Under strong sun the light is intense, so to avoid overexposing the image the camera cranks the shutter speed up as high as it can — to 1/1000, 1/2000, even faster. The faster the shutter, the more dead-frozen and razor-sharp every single frame becomes. That sounds like "sharp = good," but moving video doesn't work that way. What our eyes — and what cinema has trained us to expect — is a little bit of natural motion blur between each frame, blur that glues consecutive frames together so the image flows. Kill that blur with a fast shutter and the footage becomes a string of frozen, sharp stills jammed end to end; pick up any speed and it starts to stutter and judder. That's exactly where the "plasticky," "jello" look comes from.

So what this article fixes is really two sides of one coin: one side is locking the shutter at the right value so the motion blur is natural; the other is using an ND filter to cut the excess light so the camera doesn't quietly crank the shutter back up because it's too bright. The two are tied together — neither works without the other. Get this cause-and-effect straight first and everything after it falls into place.

Just remember one line: sharp doesn't mean good. Moving video wants natural flow, and flow depends on the right amount of motion blur. Too fast a shutter kills the blur and makes the image stutter — and that has nothing to do with whether your camera is a flagship or shoots 4K.

The 180° shutter rule: what to actually set

There's an old rule that's been passed down in filmmaking for nearly a hundred years called the 180-degree shutter rule. It originally described the semicircular shutter disc in a film movie camera, but converted to the digital cameras we hold today the takeaway is dead simple and easy to remember: your shutter speed should be roughly one over double your frame rate (fps).

Lay it out and it gets even clearer. If I shoot at 24fps, I set the shutter to 1/48 (and if the camera doesn't have that exact step, I grab the closest, 1/50); at 30fps, I set 1/60; for slow motion at 60fps, I set 1/120. The idea is to have the shutter open for exactly half of each frame, and that ratio produces the amount of motion blur the human eye finds most natural — the sweet spot with the most "cinematic" feel. Too much blur and the image smears into mush; too little and it stutters. That 1/2 ratio is an answer that's been validated for a century.

And here's exactly where the problem shows up: you lock the shutter to 1/60 in the camera, but on a bright day there's so much light that with a fixed shutter and fixed ISO the exposure blows out instantly into a sheet of dead white. At that point the camera has only three options — raise the shutter (which wrecks the 1/60 we just locked), open the aperture wider (action-cam lenses have a fixed aperture, so that's impossible), or… cut the light at the source. That third path is the ND filter.

What an ND filter is, and why it's non-negotiable

ND stands for Neutral Density. Think of it as sunglasses for your camera: a piece of neutral-grey glass locked in front of the lens that evenly cuts a set amount of incoming light without throwing off the color. The key is the word "neutral" — it only reduces light, it doesn't touch color, so your sky stays blue and your tarmac stays black, just darker overall, which gives you the room to hold the shutter at 1/60.

Why is it non-negotiable? Because on an action camera you really only have three exposure dials: aperture, ISO, and shutter. The aperture is fixed and can't move; you've already pushed ISO to its lowest at 100, and there's nowhere lower to go; and we're insisting on keeping the shutter locked at 1/60. Two dials locked, one that can't move — and the sun is pouring in more light than they can handle. The only exit left is to block some of that light with an ND filter before it ever reaches the sensor. This isn't a nice-to-have accessory; it's the only solvable term in the equation of "I want 1/60 without overexposing."

A lot of people, hearing this for the first time, ask: why not just leave the shutter alone and let the camera auto-expose? You can, but that's giving up the quality of the image. In auto mode the camera cares only about "don't overexpose," and it will jump the shutter past 1/1000 without hesitation — putting you right back at that choppy, plasticky footage from the start. What an ND filter buys you is the ability to hold that beautiful shutter manually while the exposure still comes out right. A piece of glass that costs a few bucks buys the quality of the whole video — I think that's an extremely good deal.

Which ND filter to pick: one chart by light

ND filters come in strengths — the common ones are ND4, ND8, ND16, ND32, ND64 — and the bigger the number, the more light it cuts. The logic is simple: every time the number doubles, you cut one more stop of light (one EV). ND8 cuts three stops, ND16 four, ND32 five, ND64 six. The bigger the number, the brighter the environment you're dealing with and the more light you need to block.

In practice you don't actually need to calculate EVs — just remember "brighter = bigger number." Using 4K30, shutter locked at 1/60, and ISO 100 as my baseline, here's the chart I actually use:

A few practical notes. First, this chart is built around 30fps; if you often shoot 60fps slow motion, your shutter goes to 1/120 with a shorter exposure window, so in the same light you can drop down a size in ND. Second, in hot tropical or subtropical regions where the summer sun is brutal, in practice I swap between ND16 and ND32 the most, and ND8 only comes out for overcast days or when I'm diving into the tree shade on a mountain road. Third, ND filters genuinely aren't expensive — rather than gambling each ride on whether the one filter I brought is enough, I'd suggest just buying an ND8/16/32/64 set outright, so the whole day from early morning to high noon you never have to touch the shutter for exposure. That's the most hassle-free way to buy them, in my book.

Some kits come in an ND/PL hybrid (ND plus a polarizer), adding glare suppression and a deeper, bluer sky — especially noticeable riding past water reflections or glass-curtain buildings. But a polarizer changes strength as the bike turns and also eats a touch more light, so for beginners I'd suggest getting comfortable with plain ND first before deciding whether to go advanced.

My exact camera settings and filter routine

Enough theory — here's exactly what I do on the DJI Osmo Action 4 before every ride. I'm writing the order out plainly; you can map it straight onto a GoPro or Insta360 too, just with different menu names. Quick note first: my Action 4 is actually two years old now, and I'm planning to upgrade to a DJI Osmo Action 6 or something newer down the line — but whether or not I swap cameras, this lock-the-shutter, pair-with-ND logic doesn't change. After the upgrade I just switch the filters to the version for the new mount.

One: switch to a mode where you can lock the parameters manually. Whatever camera you're on, get out of full auto and into Pro mode or manual mode first, so the shutter, ISO, and white balance can't jump around on their own. Auto exposure is the enemy of all of this; step one is to turn it off.

Two: push ISO to its lowest and lock it. I fix it at ISO 100. The lower the ISO, the cleaner the image and the less noise — and once it's locked, the only things managing exposure are the shutter and the ND. Fewer variables, easier to control.

Three: lock the shutter per the 180-degree rule. I mostly shoot 4K30, so I fix the shutter at 1/60; when I switch to 60fps for slow motion, I move the shutter to 1/120. Once it's locked it doesn't move, and all the remaining exposure work goes to the ND filter.

Four: lock the white balance. A lot of people skip this. If white balance is on auto, the camera will quietly shift the color temperature as you pass through tree shade, under a bridge, or into a tunnel — and an entire clip that swings cold-to-warm is a nightmare to fix in the edit. I lock a fixed value to the conditions (roughly 5300–5600K on a sunny day) so the whole take stays color-consistent.

Five: fit the ND that matches the current light, then nudge by the exposure meter. On a sunny day I lock ND16 on first and check the camera's exposure indicator. If it's still too bright, I swap to ND32; if I dive into tree shade and it gets dark, I drop back to ND8. A lot of filters are magnetic now, so you can swap one in three seconds at the roadside — quick. The principle is: change the ND, not the shutter. When exposure is off, always think "should I swap an ND filter?" first, not reach for that locked shutter.

There's one habit of mine worth calling out on its own: I shoot in a 4:3 aspect ratio and crop back to 16:9 in the edit. Doing it this way has two benefits. One is that the extra image top and bottom is my safety margin — the bike shakes, my head whips through a corner, and sometimes the thing I wanted to film slips out of the 16:9 frame, but because I recorded the taller 4:3 it's actually still there, not really lost. The other is that in the edit I can decide, shot by shot, where to frame the image and which detail to emphasize — effectively re-composing in post. The overall flexibility is much higher, and the only cost is slightly larger files, which I think is very much worth it.

My shooting setup in one line: lock ISO at minimum, lock the shutter to your frame rate, lock white balance, balance exposure with ND, and shoot 4:3 to keep composition room. Lock down everything that would jump around on its own, and leave the ND as the single variable you're controlling by hand — that consistency is exactly where good footage comes from.

Post: Log-M, official LUTs, and my grade

ND and shutter solve the "motion" quality; color is a separate thread, finished in post. Here's my actual color workflow, because it's what directly decides whether the video reads as "phone snapshot" or "someone who actually cares is doing this."

I shoot in Log-M (D-Log M). Log is a flatter recording mode where contrast and saturation are deliberately pulled down; straight out of camera it looks grey and unappealing, but it preserves as much highlight and shadow detail as possible, giving you the most room to adjust in post. Put simply, Log isn't meant to be watched directly — it's footage with the most "raw material" baked in, so I have something to work with at the computer. The recent GoPro generations have their own Log too (GP-Log); same concept, different name.

Step one: apply the camera maker's official LUT to restore the color. Because Log footage is flattened, the first job is to "translate" it back to normal color. DJI provides an official LUT for D-Log M, and once you apply it the grey footage snaps back to normal contrast and accurate color. I treat this step as "color restoration" — get back to the correct baseline first, rather than rushing to add style. The advantage of the official LUT is that it understands the maker's own sensor best, so skin tones, the sky, and tarmac all come out more accurate.

Step two: build my own preferred grade on top of that restored base. Once the baseline is right, that's when you add personality. Here's the thing to remember: there's no bike in a POV frame — the lens looks out at the road and that stretch of sky — so the focus of my grade isn't the bodywork, it's the sky. I tend to push gently toward blue, making the sky bluer and cleaner, but I'm very restrained about it, never letting it get vivid enough to look fake; I'll tweak contrast only slightly, never crush it deep. What I want is a natural, easy-on-the-eyes blue sky, not a heavy-handed one that steals the scene. There's no single right answer here — it's the channel's tone, and everyone can grade their own flavor. The one thing you can't reverse is the order: restore with the official LUT first, then layer your preferred grade on top, so the color stands up and doesn't get skewed.

Only at the end do I crop the 4:3 image down to 16:9 for export. This is where that safety margin I kept earlier pays off — I go through clip by clip deciding where to frame, keeping the best composition. Audio is a completely separate thread — I record the exhaust note on its own with a Zoom H2n and sync it to picture in the edit, which is a whole other piece of homework I'll leave aside here. Get this picture thread — shutter, ND, Log plus LUT — running smoothly and your POV is already pulling ahead of most people.

A few mistakes I made so you don't have to

Finally, let me lay out the detours I took myself, so you can skip them.

Mistake one: heading out with just one filter. Early on I only had a single ND16, and the result was a mountain ride where diving into tree shade went too dark while coming out into the sun wasn't enough — the whole take swung bright and dark. After that I dutifully carried a set, swapping whatever filter for whatever light. Much less hassle.

Mistake two: forgetting to lock white balance. One time I happily locked the shutter and the ND, but left white balance on auto, and crossing a stretch of shadow under a bridge the color temperature drifted away completely — that section's color was unfixable no matter what I tried. After that, white balance always gets locked too.

Mistake three: assuming an expensive camera means you can skip the ND. These are two entirely different things. The most flagship action camera in the world still has a fixed aperture, still controls exposure only through shutter and ISO, and still gets forced to crank the shutter in strong sun. ND is the solution to a physics problem, not a question of camera tier.

Mistake four: thinking the LUT finishes the grade. The official LUT "restores" the color to a correct baseline; it isn't the final look. Without that layer of preferred grading on top, the image will be accurate but flat. Remember there's still your own flavor to add after the LUT.

Avoid these few mistakes, add the lock-the-shutter, pick-the-ND, Log-plus-LUT workflow from above, and your bright-sun POV goes from "choppy, plasticky" to "smooth and cinematic." Do I really need an ND filter for motorcycle POV?

If you ride in bright daylight, I'd say it's pretty much mandatory. Without an ND filter, the camera fights overexposure by cranking the shutter up to 1/1000 or even faster, which freezes every frame stone-dead with no natural motion blur. The moment you pick up speed the footage starts to stutter, judder, and look cheap and plasticky. What shutter speed should I set for motorcycle POV?

Use the 180-degree shutter rule: your shutter is roughly one over double your frame rate. Shooting 24fps, set 1/48 (or the closest setting, 1/50). At 30fps, set 1/60. At 60fps, set 1/120.
